UFo Media IMPERIAL, Pa. (September 19) - If there is anybody that is red hot in the dirt late model racing world, it is Zanesville, Ohio's Bart Hartman. After a $42,000 payday last week in the World 100, Hartman returned to Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway for the running of "The Ultimate vs. The Pittsburgher." He had a $8,000 win here earlier this year in his only other visit, and kept his perfect record intact by sweeping this weekend as well. First order of business was the 21st Annual Pittsburgher, where he advanced from eighth starting spot to win $10,000 for his 51-lap victory. Then he came back in The Ultimate 15, racing from 20th starting position to win $10,000 for that 51-lap victory. By winning both of the two uniquely formatted racing programs, Hartman also earned a $10,000 bonus, giving him $30,000 in earnings on Saturday night in the event that ended the season for the UFo Race Championship.
Starting Saturday's program were three B-Mains to fill the field for the two races. Dave Hess, Jr., Davey Johnson, and Hartman won these events.
A field of 30 starters were set for the 21st Annual Pittsburgher. In the redraw for the top 15 starting positions, Gregg Satterlee and Nebraska's Kyle Berck drew the front row positions and led the field to the green flag. Satterlee grabbed the lead at the start as cars raced all over the ultra-wide track billed as the "Dirt's Monster Half-Mile." Third starting Jared Miley moved to second on lap 1 and quickly moved in to challenge Satterlee for the lead, making the pass to gain the lead on lap 4. Sixth starting Steve Baker moved to third at lap 3, and passed Satterlee for second on lap 6. Eighth starting Hartman took third on lap 7, and closed on Baker for second as Miley had built a comfortable margin. The first of the Pittsburgher's three caution periods appeared on lap 14.
On the double file restart, Baker nosed ahead of Miley to take the lead on lap 15. The yellow appeared again on lap 16 when former Ultimate winner Jeremy Miller slowed. During this caution period, leader Baker parked his potent mount due to overheating problems. Miley inherited the lead with Baker's misfortune.
Miley controlled the double file restart, leading Hartman, 12th starting Jason Covert, 14th starting John Flinner, and Satterlee. Austin Hubbard took fifth from 11th starting position a lap later. On lap 19, fourth running Flinner slowed in turn two, ending his Pittsburgher.
When the race resumed for the final time, Hartman powered into the lead on lap 20 over Covert, Miley, Hubbard, and tenth starting Matt Lux. After battling for third, Hubbard passed Miley for the spot on lap 25. Hartman pulled to a comfortable lead, and was soon battling race traffic. Hubbard's march forward saw him catching Covert by lap 35. They battled for the runner-up spot for a few laps, as Hubbard finally passed on lap 38. With the leaders still battling lapped traffic, Hartman still led, though Hubbard used the traffic to close in on the leader. With five laps remaining, the lead gap was a few car lengths. At the two-to-go mark, Hubbard made a run for the lead through turns one and two that fell just short.
Hartman went on to score the Pittsburgher win over Hubbard, the Delaware teenager that was impressive in his first PPMS visit. Covert was a strong third. Fourth place was hotly contested over the closing laps, with Miley nipping Lux for the position. Kyle Berck visit from Marquette, NE was good enough for sixth place. He looked better each time he got on the track, but unfortunately missed qualifying for the Ultimate. Davey Johnson was seventh, after starting 13th. Turning in an impressive run from 29th starting position, Lynn Geisler advanced forward to finish eighth. Kyle Lukon was ninth, as Dave Hess, Jr. advanced 10 positions to finish tenth.
Unlike most twin feature programs, "The Ultimate vs. The Pittsburgher" featured separate qualifying heats on Friday's card, lined up in reverse order. The top 15 redraw for The Ultimate found Jim Stephans and Kyle Lukon landing front row starting berths. When the 30 starters took the green flag, eventual winner Hartman lined up 20th. Originally gridded for 23rd, he advanced three spots due to Al Atallah and Steve Baker switching to backup cars, and Daryl Charlier starting scratch. Stephans took the lead at the green flag, leading to the first of The Ultimate's eight caution periods.
Stephans and Lukon battled for the lead when racing resumed. Stephans led lap 3, with Lukon taking over on lap 4. They stayed close for the lead, while a three wide battle for third was taking place on lap 8. Jared Miley took third on lap 9, as the yellow appeared with 12 laps in. Lukon led on the restart, with Hartman charging forward to sixth. Yellow appeared again when fifth running Miley spun in turn three. On this restart, 11th starting Austin Hubbard moved to the point on lap 14 over Lukon, Hartman, Alan Sagi, and John Flinner. Hubbard led through the next caution period with 16 complete. When racing resumed, Hubbard led Hartman, Lukon, Flinner, and Matt Lux.
A lap 20 restart set the battle for the lead again. Hartman made an outside pass of Hubbard, taking the lead a lap later than he did in the Pittsburgher. Flinner was now third, with Lux moving to fourth on lap 22. When Rich Apolito impacted the turn two wall with 23 laps in, this would set up the longest green flag run of the race on this restart.
Hartman led the way when racing resumed on lap 24, over Hubbard, Lux, Jason Covert, and Flinner. Flinner took fourth a lap later. Hartman built a comfortable lead before he began to encounter race traffic. Flinner took third from Lux on lap 37. When it appeared that Hartman had things going his way, a pair of late cautions appeared on laps 44 and 46. Hartman's big lead was gone due to the yellow, and Hubbard would line up to his inside on the double file restart. While Hubbard welcomed the restart to get close to Hartman, his main issue was that he struggled to get up to speed when racing resumed.
Lap 45 saw Hartman leading over Hubbard, Lux, Covert, and Davey Johnson. Flinner fell back on the restart, and eventually got into trouble on lap 46 ending his race. Hubbard lost second on the final restart, allowing Hartman to sweep the day's events, earning his $10,000 bonus after charging forward from 20th. Covert was impressive in his first PPMS start, backing up his third place finish in the Pittsburgher with a second in The Ultimate. After being unable to start the Pittsburgher after breaking a driveshaft during the parade laps, Keith Barbara's crew effected repairs to his car for the Ultimate. Their hard work paid dividends as he made a fantastic drive from 23rd to finish third. Hubbard fell to fourth at the finish. Lux duplicated his earlier finish in fifth. Davey Johnson was one position better in this race than the first one, in his run from 19th to sixth. His brother Mike was right behind him in seventh, as he advanced from 18th. Steve Baker borrowed Leo Stadelman's car after his was rendered useless in the first event. His fortunes were much better in The Ultimate, racing from 28th to finish eighth. Miley came from the back after his lap 13 incident to place ninth, with Lukon finishing tenth.
Alex Ferree from Saxonburg, PA earned his second UFo Race Championship point title in the second year of the Series. John Mollick of Toronto, OH followed the Series for the first time, and came home an impressive second. Keith Barbara from South Park, PA ran the entire schedule, and finished third in points for the second straight season. Last year's runner-up Jared Miley of South Park, PA was fourth in points, and may have won the championship had he not missed an event earlier this year. Mike Johnson of Imperial, PA improved his point standing one position from 2008, finishing fifth in the Series standings. Rounding out the top ten in UFo points were Mike Basich, John Flinner, Lynn Geisler, Brandon Burgoon, and Gregg Satterlee. The tracks and officials of the UFo Race Championship pass out their most sincere thanks to every competitor that supported each race on the tour. A proposed UFo event later in the year will not be UFo sanctioned, but the UFo Championship Tour thanks Hesston Speedway for their interest and wishes them well with this and future events.
