PITTSBURGH, Penn. (August 28) - Shinnston WV's Josh Richards made his first start of 2010 a winning one by picking up the 4th Annual Red Miley Rumble UFO/ULMS 44 Lap Feature for the Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic DIRTcar Super Late Models. Jason Covert and Dave Johnson brought the field down for the start. Johnson grabbed the lead at the start and led the first 9 laps before Richards took over. Richards, who started 6th, made quick work of the first four drivers moving into second on the first lap, and followed Johnson patiently before making his move. From this point on, Richards dominated the event and was never seriously challenged. Meanwhile, fans were watching the action behind Richards to see if a challenger would emerge. The first yellow of the event was on lap 15 for debris on the front straight. At this point defending race champ Bart Hartman pulled into the pits with a broken driveshaft, out of the event. On the restart, Dennis Lunger spun in turn three. The race went 4 more laps before John Mollick slowed and brought out the caution on lap 20 and went pit side. At this point quite a few eyes were on 2008 RMR winner Steve Baker, who started 21st and was up to 7th using his regular against the wall groove. The restart saw 8th running John Flinner get into Baker's rear going into the first turn spinning him out, and stacking up Baker, Jared Hawkins, Jason Rider, Tom Beck, Chad McClellan, and Danny Mitchell. All returned to the event except Mitchell who was helped off the track by two wreckers. On the restart it was Richards leading Dave Johnson, Jason Covert, Jared Miley and Mike Johnson. The last yellow came out on lap 29 for Jared Miley who slowed with a flat. The rest of the event ran without incident, and at the finish it was Richards, Dave Johnson, Covert, Dave Hess Jr. (who was the hard charger coming from 19th), Boom Briggs, Mike Johnson, Tom Beck, Keith Barbara, Lynn Geisler and Greg Satterlee. Five heats were run for the 45 car field, with Josh Richards, Bart Hartman, Jared Miley, Brandon Burgoon, and Keith Barbara taking wins. Two B-Mains were run with Steve Baker and Ben Miley winning those.
The rained out 28 lap UFO/ULMS Penn National Late Model feature from July 24th was also run, with current PPMS point leader Mike Johnson Imperial PA grabbing his second win of the season and first ever UFO/ULMS event. Dennis Lunger and Brandon Wearing brought the field down for the start, with Lunger taking the lead at the start. Keith Barbara and Boom Briggs moved into the front spots and battled for first, while 10th starting Mike Johnson and 11th starting Steve Baker moved into the top 5. A yellow came out on the 2nd lap for Chad McClellan. On the restart Jason Rider spun and brought out the yellow again. The next restart saw Briggs have engine problems and not go, stacking several cars behind him, including Jared Miley, Jason Rider, Jim Lepro, Ben Miley and Chad McClellan with Rider flipping over. Rider was OK while the red flag was displayed to clean up the mess. Ben Miley and McClellan were able to return. The race was restarted, but before the next lap was completed Bump Hedman spun and brought out the yellow again. Finally after the race resumed, and Mike Johnson shot past the leader and took the lead. Johnson pulled away as he was in a different time zone, while the battle for second heated up between Keith Barbara, Steve Baker and Lynn Geisler. At the finish Johnson was way out front, and was followed by Barbara, Baker, Geisler, Brandon Burgoon (who charged from 23rd), Lunger, Brandon Wearing, John Flinner, Jim Stephans, and Tom Beck. For Johnson it was the biggest win of his career. 26 of the original 29 starters returned, with 24 starting the feature with Dave Wade and Daryl Charlier not making the call.
In the Brougher's Machine Shop Fastrak Crate Late Models, Burgettstown PA's Kyle Lukon was the surprise winner of the 20 lap main. Lukon, who started 4th led the first lap, then trailed Mike Pegher Jr. for the next 17 laps. While Lukon was just a couple car lengths behind the entire race, it looked as if Pegher was going to pick up his 4th win of the season, but with just two laps to go, Pegher pitted putting Lukon in the lead. For Pegher, it was the third time this season that he looked like he was well on his way to win, only to break in the waning laps. At the finish it was Lukon, Jeff Broniszewski, Dennis Neiderriter, Mike Reft, Colton Flinner, Shawn Jett, Tommy Schirnhofer Jr., Laura Lukon, Bryan Hoffman, and Dusty Curry. Mark Moats Jr. and Mike Pegher Jr. took the heats.
The Miley RV Sales UMP Modifieds saw invader Waterford PA's Dave Hess Jr. grab his first win of the season here. Hess, who started 12th, took the lead off Tom Martineck on lap 5 and led the remaining laps to grab the win. Vince Laboon ran a strong race to finish second followed by Evan Taylor, Jonathan Taylor, Shawn Domhoff, J.E. Stalder, Martineck, Chris Basich, Bruce Takach and Willy Briggs. Dave Hess Jr. and Evan Taylor won the heats.
Imperial PA's Nick Kocuba continued his strong late season run and picked up his second feature of the season in the Sunoco Race Fuels DIRTcar Cadets. Kocuba started 3rd and took over the lead on lap 2 from Joe Koteles, lost it briefly to Pat Weldon, and regained it to lead the remaining laps. Craig Koteles was second followed by Danny Rich, who was making his first start of the season, Jake Simmons, Jesse Gould, Dave McManus, Gary Koteles, Joe Koteles, Tyler Fox, and Steve Webb. The heats fell to Pat Weldon and Jake Simmons.
The Miley BP Car Wash DIRTcar Hobby Stocks saw Carnegie PA's Brian Huchko pick up his 9th win of the season and third in a row, holding off a strong challenge from Adam Chytil. Ricky Steigerwald was third followed by Ian Tomei, Ed Wiser, Joe Podolinsky, Alec Broniszewski, Garrett Keffer and Chase Evans. Brian Huchko won the lone heat.
The Imperial Heights Garage DIRTcar Young Guns, Carnegie PA's Daniel White grabbed his 6th win. White defeated Alec Broniszewski, Hannah Ramsey, Adam Carson, Bernie Blair Jr., and Logan Crewl.
