MARKLEYSBURG, Penn. (October 9) - Jason Covert from York Haven, PA was the winner of The Ultimate on Saturday night at the Roaring Knob Motorsports Complex. After a thrilling side-by-side battle with Rob Blair near the midpoint of the event, Covert took the lead for good when Blair exited the event on lap 43. Covert's victory in the 55-lap event was worth $5,000.
Chad McClellan from Stoystown, PA is the point champion for the UFo Race Championship in 2010, ending the 15 event season just one point ahead of Keith Barbara of South Park, PA. Entering the night's race, it was Barbara with a three point lead over McClellan. After leading early, Barbara exited the event while running third on lap 35, and was credited with finishing the race in the 20th position. Needing to finish four spots ahead of Barbara, McClellan did that and just barely that, as his car rolled to a stop with four laps remaining in the race. However, his finishing position would be 16th, giving him that one point margin of victory.
John Mollick was third in the UFo Race Championship points. Danny Mitchell was fourth, with Tommy Beck fifth. Jared Miley, Jared Hawkins, Doug Horton, Jim Stephans, and John Flinner rounded out the top ten in the season-long point chase.
44 cars were in attendance, divided into five qualifying heats of 13 laps in distance. Gregg Satterlee was the winner of Heat 1, from the pole. Keith Jackson won the second heat, also from the pole. Jeremy Miller won Heat 3, from second starting spot. Jason Covert won Heat 4, also from second. Keith Barbara won Heat 5, also from the pole. Two B-Mains filled the starting grid, and they were won by Dave Hess, Jr. and Bob Hershman.
First heat winner Gregg Satterlee drew for all drivers for the top ten starting position. After pulling the worst of the ten positions for himself, he drew the pole for Keith Jackson. Keith Barbara ended up with the outside pole, setting the starting grid for the 55-lap The Ultimate.
At the drop of the green flag, Barbara used the outside groove to take the lead over Jackson, Rob Blair, and Rick Briggs. Jeremy Miller took fifth from D.J. Myers on lap 3. The race for second was hotly contested, with Blair passing Jackson on lap 10. At lap 14, Blair had quickly caught Barbara in the battle for the lead. With the leaders approaching race traffic, Blair dove to the inside of Barbara, making the pass off of turn four to take the lead on lap 15. Covert continued his march forward, as he was fourth by lap 19.
The long run of green flag racing to start the race ended on lap 20, with the first caution period of the race when Gregg Satterlee rolled to a stop. Blair controlled the double file restart, showing the way over Barbara, Covert, Jackson, and Jeremy Miller. In the battle for second, Covert made the pass to take the spot on lap 23. The second caution waved on lap 24, when D.J. Myers slowed.
The stage was now set for an amazing battle for the race lead. Blair chose the outside for the restart, and resumed command of the race with Covert settling into second. After a couple laps, Covert came to life and gained on Blair. At lap 30, Covert caught the leader and went to Blair's outside. On lap 31, Covert nosed ahead to take the lead. Blair nosed back ahead on the inside to lead lap 32. Lap 33 had Covert back ahead on the outside. Blair again regained the lead on lap 34. They were still side-by-side, with Blair ahead by a nose on lap 35 as the caution ended the thrilling battle when third running Barbara slowed.
Blair took the outside on this double file restart, but this time he was up to the challenge and pulled away in the lead. Covert, Jackson, Miller, and 18th starting Jamie Lathroum now filled the top five. The next yellow flag waved on lap 43, when Russell King slowed in turn four.
This restart was the downfall for Blair. He led the field to turn one, then immediately slowed at the top of turn two. He was towed to the pits with problems to the rear of his car, and his race was over. Covert inherited the lead over Jackson, Miller, Lathroum, and 15th starting Jared Miley. Covert led the restart over Jackson, Miller, Miley, and Lathroum. Just one more caution period slowed the pace, when McClellan exited on lap 51.
Jason Covert led the double file restart with four laps remaining, and showed the way to the checkered flag to pick up the $5,000 victory from ninth starting position. Second place was battled heavily over the closing laps, with Jeremy Miller taking runner-up honors after starting eighth. Keith Jackson was third from the pole. Jared Miley came from 15th to finish fourth. From 18th, Jamie Lathroum finished fifth and earned the Pass-Maximum award, presented by Bernheisel Race Components and Lazer Chassis. Boom Briggs, Dutch Davies, Jared Hawkins, Booper Bare, and Mel Minnick rounded out the top ten.
In Friday's non-sanctioned preliminary night action, Jeremy Miller was the winner of the 36-lap Night Flight Scramble. Miller took the lead from D.J. Myers on lap 12, and led the remaining distance. Rob Blair made a late challenge, but settled for second. Jamie Lathroum was third, with Booper Bare fourth. Jared Hawkins was fifth, as 34 cars were on hand.
