Tom Freimann OLATHE, Colo. (May 3) - The Western Dirt Racing Association, Inc started it 2008 Super Dirt Late Model season in its own backyard at Thunder Mountain Speedway located just 40 minutes from Grand Junction in the high desert of the western Rocky Mountains. It was a nice sunny day, with temperatures in the upper 60's when the 13 Late Model drivers arrived to TMS. The track owner, Sean Gibbs, had made great improvements in having a well prepared, dust free racing surface for the fans to see the high horse powered stock cars roar around the track. And the full house of race fans was not disappointed!
Heat one found past WDRA champion Dean Moore of Grand Junction on the pole with Helper, UT Corey Smith on the outside in his brand new all black machine. Last year's WDRA Champion Jeep Berry started the heat in 5th, but that all changed very quickly when the green flag flew to start the race. Jeep made short order of the field to take the checkered flag, with Dean in second, the 29A of Racin Jason Davis finished third in the heat with Aztec, NM Jeff Davis and Corey Smith rounding out the top 5.
Heat two the made it's way onto the track with Cahone, CO's Andy Hill on the pole and his brother, Kyle Hill on the outside. The green flag flew and this heat had it's share of minor casualties… with the 16B of Jason Schobinger coming to a rest in the infield halfway through the heat, soon to be followed by Rifle, CO's Michael Wright, whose fuel pump belt popped off. Both cars had minor breakdowns and were ready to race in the feature. Heat two was won by Andy Hill, followed by Kyle Hill, Gillette, WY's pink #62 piloted by Kim Horn, with Scott Aibner and Michael Wright rounding out the top five.
The WDRA did away with the pole dash this year, and instead will invert the number of rows as determined by the first heat race winner drawing a pill to decide how many of the first four rows will invert. Jeep drew a number 2 and that put the Hill Brothers in the front row. The Race ran smoothly, with limited caution and little dust. The Main Feature was won by Jeep, with Jeff Davis in second. Dean Moore spun with twelve to go and still pulled out a third place finish. Jason Davis of Grand Junction finished 4th with Paonia, CO driver Curt Daniels in fifth. The sharp looking 16B of Jason Schobinger of Wiggins, CO was sixth, Kim Horn in seventh, Corey Smith in eighth and Andy Hill and Michael Wright rounding out the top ten.
It was a great night of racing for all, with no complete casualties for the night. The WDRA Super Dirt Late models will be returning to Thunder Mountain Speedway on Friday May 23rd, again at Thinder Mountain Speedway.
