Bucky Doren EAGLE, Neb. (July 3) - John Kaanta soared to the World Dirt Racing League win at Eagle Raceway on Thursday, July 3, 2008. Despite a late-race caution that tightened the field, Kaanta was first to the checkered flag.
John Kaanta (Elk Mound, WI) started on the outside front row and beat pole-sitter Bryant Goldsmith (Corning, IA) off of turn two for the lead. Kaanta held the lead while working through heavy lapped traffic on the fast-paced 1/3-mile oval.
"While I was trying to get around lapped traffic, I kept hearing motors around me," Kaanta said after the race. "I wasn't sure if they were lapped cars or not, and I wasn't sure how close they were to me."
Throughout most of the fifty-lap WDRL Feature, Kaanta had one or two lapped cars between the second place running Goldsmith and himself. With ten laps to go, Goldsmith had dispensed of the lapped traffic and was on the back bumper of Kaanta.
"I didn't know he was that close," Kaanta added. "The late yellow (flag) helped clean up my view." A caution with six laps remaining tightened up the field, but it also left Kaanta with a clean racetrack to work with.
"You always worry about the guys behind you, and where they are running," Kaanta admitted. "I won races and lost races that way. You know never know where everyone is running behind you, but we were able to hold off for the win."
Goldsmith battled trying to get through lapped traffic, and as he finally broke free of the back markers, Goldsmith was looking to use the those cars to his advantage to try and steal the win away from Kaanta. That yellow took that chance away, and Goldsmith settle for second. Kyle Berck, Eric Pember and Chad Simpson rounded out the top five.
The third and final day of the firecracker tour for the WDRL Late Model Series takes the gang to Clay County Speedway in Spencer, IA.
