My current open motor came from a modified.
Dont be fooled most guys that run up front in modifieds, I believe are running some pretty good motors. Put a soft tire on a mod. and them guys will lift more than the left front off the ground.

That little mod motor I'm selling will make about 470 at the flywheel on Alky. That's plenty of grunt for any track except maybe Hanford on a real hooked up night. All of you street guys that think they need steel cranks, fancy rods, and expensive pistons should think twice. That motor has been extremely reliable turning about 7200 the way it is and that's more power than any of your two barrel motors are making( if your engine builder tells you different he's full of it).

I know for a fact that it was a mod motor. I was thinking of buying it when it was at Kawahata's just sitting there.

It was before you bought it. I decided i didn't want just open comp motor, so i went smaller cubic inch & more compression.

The lastest roumer(sp) was that theres someone, or some people running aftermarket blocks in the street stocks. I hope its just a roomer(tried again still wrong) If thats true thats just freaking nuts. All this motor stuff has to stop somewhere.
And as far as the streets versus mods Im all for that one . time trials for both classes top 4 each class , 8 lap dash for some cash.

I think the rumors are true. I believe there are some aftermarket steel blocks out there. I don't have one, but I don't mind if others do. I actually think aftermarket blocks are heavier than stock, wich is usually what a dirt car doesn't need.

I like that, is the crank under 40lbs?, because Lee says the block is a little heavy--
Woops, did I just say that?

Lee you are right, the Dart Little M blocks are heaveir than a OEM block. It would be great to build a big bore short stroke 360" motor that would really last with out pulling webs out of a OEM 400 block. If you read a lot of track rules they state steel OEM blocks only no aftermarket....not the case for Bako

I don't think a guy should be penalized for building a more reliable engine

If the want to throw money away let them do it. The power levels the street stocks have don't warrant it at all. I'm not sure about the Dart block, but a bow tie is almost 40 lbs heavier than a standard 4 bolt. Throw on some aftermarket heads that are 30 lbs heavier than stock and you will get your doors blown off my all the cars with 4% more rear weight than you have.

You definitely would not be throwing your money away by going with an aftermarket block. The super street motors of today are making power that the factory blocks were not designed to withstand, that is a fact. If you are lucky enough to not have had a main journal crack or any other block failure you more than likely are not putting out the horsepower you think that you are. Lets not forget block flex and twist and its effects on things like lifter bores, cam bores etc.. Some people never get it in their head that if you dump money into fancy parts put neglect one area like say the block, the motor will always find the weakest link and let go. Seen it many, many times. One thing that amazes me is how little most racers actually know about engine building and setup... I guess its the ol loose nut behind the wheel.

i agree with the dirt hurt . when you run on a hooked up track you really make the engine grunt , especially in a SS @ 3000lbs and a good tire . we experienced excactly what he is talking about on our motor (#4 main web cracked) , so we decided to protect the rest of the parts in our motor and go with a beefier aftermarket block . it is in no way a performance advantage as it is stock bore and stroke , plus it wieghts at least 20lbs. more(not the place you want to add 20lbs either). ryan if you think this is such a travesty i'm sorry , but we take this racing thing pretty seriously and want to do it for a while so we buy parts that will last .
Tony .

Just got the scales out and the bare 4" bore 350 main Little M is 201 lbs and a oem bare 400 block is 176 lbs

Well that's a few less pounds the what I was told a Bow Tie weighs, but still I have spent a lot of money trying to get far less weight than that off the front of a race car. We've had very few block problems with stock block motors making quite a lot of h.p.. A lot of the spec head late model motors are even built on a splay cap stock block. Those make about 600 hp, but that is definitely pushing the limits.

What ever happened to the exibition race? I'm game if it's still on. IMCA run our rules, SS run their rules, qualify for position for a 10 lap dash.
