E v W How many races?
09/18/06 at 10:48pm
Now this is just a personal poll of sorts. I'm sure answers will be read by the powers that be, but they're not asking the question.
Teams, as I read the question about E v W at kings it made me wonder how many E v W races the average team would want to race.
I think it would be awesome for the series to run more tracks. Hanford, Bako, Chow, SMS, even Perris, however the more tracks the series goes to, the less races we'll be able to have at each track.
Promoters, (I know some of you read this) from your standpoint is there a point when only having a couple of E v W races at your track is not worth it? Or would it actually be nicer to be able to promote and advertise the series as a headliner traveling show a couple times a year?
As we're nearing the end of 06, and heading into 07, I thought it would be good to get some opinions on these questions.

Those numbers sound better to me. I was actually thinking 12 - 15 myself. I'm just wondering if we had fewer races, if it would be easier to round a purse out (as Billy has wanted for a while), and keep the car counts higher which in turn would make the series more desirable to promoters, which may also make the purses better in the end.

i also think that the three tracks should run only evw next year . if you could pay everybody a minimum(say 200-like tow money) then i think you may see increased counts . maybe find a title sponsor but distribute the extra coin though the field much like the bottoms up .

I'm torn on this issue. In some ways I'd like to see it this way, as I think it would help the E vs W car counts, but I'm afraid it might be short term. Some teams don't want to travel, and it might be better to let them race a SS at their home track until they are competitive enough to travel. We need a good purse structure to make people want to race the series for it, but I think we need local SS races to feed the series from.
My vision goes like this: We come to a local track that is running a SS division for $500 to win on a regular night. They get about a dozen cars on those nights. The E v W comes to town, one of the regulars of the weekly show runs 3rd, makes $600 and thinks "hey I could do this." Meanwhile the Hobby guys are more likely to move up to this weekly division, because they can break in while the hard hitters are out racing the series.
I realize nothing is that perfect, but I'm throwing it out there as an ideal.

Heres what I see. Racers from other divisions look at SS on non east west nights and think the class is dying. Even when the EW pulls 18 plus it still seems like the class is unstable. If the only time people saw SS the car counts were 18 plus it would look like a stable class and people would get into it more.

It's definatley a good debate.
We have the field of dreams: If we build it they will come.
and
We have the fatherly advice: "Whatever you do, always build on a firm foundation son"
It's like trickle down against trickle up. I don't think we'll solve it but I like the debate.

the other side of the debate would be fan support . would you go to the track to watch eight cars race on a weekly basis , or would you be willing to take a trip to support your favorites ?

Your right, but good scheduling could help with that some. Just don't try to headline with a weekly SS show.
In Bako guys that didn't travel with E v W (that I know of):
VanScoy
Bill Stevens
Paul Piker
Randy Fritz
Tim Bewely
Steve Helms
Larry Wise
Dave Bauer - I know brady drove it at SMS, but not sure about Dave
Richard Harrison
Mike Kelly
I just wonder if we're going to get these guys to travel, or move them to another division? If they travel it's good, if they move it's bad.

I've heard rumblings of guys wanting to move out of Hobbies and into SS. Would it be more inviting for them if they didn't have to travel?

Lee you are going in the right direction:
1. What does it take for a track to support you?
( with the WAS it was 30 cars in Bako , per Scott 8-05. and they showed up and it was ALL GOOD!)
2. What does it take for the "SHOW" to support you.
( committment from drivers and the accountability to show up and race.......ODIE!)
3. What is in it for the sponsor in each city ?
The SHOW must take responsibility for SHOWING UP IN FORCE. When this is done you will have Tracks on you like LAP DOGS CRAWLING ON PARIS HILTON!
BUT , YOU , THE SHOW MUST UNITE AND STICK TOGETHER AND I FOR ONE WILL STEP UP AND PUT MY $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ RIGHT WHERE MY MOUTH IS FOR THIS GROUP OF RACERS, BUT NO FENCE SITTERS, EITHER PUT UP OR SHUT THE PIEHOLES UP AND IF YOU COMMIT, BE COMMITTED.
peace.....................................mike
btw......Talon, the BOTTOMS UP payout speaks for itself as a GREAT MODEL for attracting cars!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HAT'S OFF TO BILLY FOR GETTING IT OFF THE GROUND!

You need to have a local series to ensure the longevity of this class. People will be intimidated by the big boys if you don't.
Modifieds at this point seem to be pulling potential drivers from the Streets. A person with lots of desire and limited budget standing on the outside looking in, would probably go to modifieds. It's a no brainer.
If building more car counts is the goal, (and it needs to be to ensure the life of the class) This should be addressed. Instead of bending rules to get more go fast legal on your cars, the focus should be on making rules that appeal to the masses. What exactly is making the Modifieds attractive?
A local class in my opinion is key to survival. I have a car and I am on the fence about next year. I need seat time and an affordable place to race (my local track). I also need a decent amount of races to run. I would be a typical recruit to the Street Stock class. Why would I choose this class over modifieds? Make it attractive, and you'll get more cars.
Some local SMS cars are already in peril for next year, and we have nobody stepping up to take their place, let alone grow this class. Simkins stated he will run EVW only next year, thats one. Breashears car is for sale, thats 2. Toby Randolph- wildcard, I doubt he races next year, possible 3. How attractive is a 4 or 5 car main event? SMS only pulled about 7 to 8 cars on a regular night. Does anybody at SM know somebody who is moving to Streets? I don't. Wake up! The class needs a brainstorm session to build it up to it's potential. Promote the class to the racers and find that special something that attracts the racers to it.
I like the crate motor deal (Bako G.M.) good step in right direction. What about a motor claim rule to go with it?
What about enforcing the rules. Get rid of the Chrysler leaf springs. Rear adjustments on leafs. Take the bite devices out of the left rear. How about a camaro on stock wheel base? Those of you who have this stuff would be against it, but its not helping your class.
I know the subject is getting old. Just had to get my 2 cents in. I'm over it.

Bottom line is BAK needs SMS cars and SMS needs BAK cars. It was proven this year cut and dry. No one says anyone has to travel. You can always run your local shows. It's not like if you don't run the EW your not envited to your local show. You want to tack some points on for the local only shows go for it. But running 2 street stock shows 2 hours apart is lowsey. I guarantee if everytime SMS fans and drivers saw 18 plus cars at SMS when the SS was runing they would think the class had some legs undernieth it. Personally, I thought the 8 car local shows at SMS were weak.
I think Odie has good ideas from time to time but his ideas get overshadowed by negativitiy. If you have issues on various topics day to day and end it with "If some of us could afford to race we would" it's like everyone rolls up the window. Mike's point as was valid, the more you show up, the more street credit you get. Although his delivery was harsh but I asume it's because the WAS was brought in.

Lee, a race schedule of 12-15 E v W races would awesome for us. 4 or so in Bako and SMS and a few in Kings and Chow would be cool. I was told earlier in the year that there were a couple of cars in the north that were interested in running with us next year. If we had a couple of races in Chow that might help generate some interest in the series. If we kept the number of E v W points races to a reasonable number, it would be easier for tracks to keep a local series if they want one.
