Second place finisher at Pepsi USA Nationals disqualified for electronic traction control use Posted on September 21, 2006 at 05:04:23 pm VINTON, Iowa (Sept. 21) – The runner-up at last weekend’s Pepsi USA Nationals Deery Brothers Summer Series Late Model event has been disqualified for use of an electronic traction control device. The ignition boxes of both the first and second place finishers were confiscated after the Sept. 16 feature and examined at the IMCA home office. “We make it a normal practice to periodically confiscate ignition boxes at sanctioned events like the Pepsi because of widespread rumors traction control devices are being used,” explained IMCA Vice President of Operations Brett Root. “While one box checked out OK, a visual inspection of the other box led us to believe there was something suspicious. When we investigated, we discovered it had a Davis Technologies electronic control device installed in it.” In addition to a $10,000 fine from IMCA, the driver also forfeits the $4,000 paid for second place at the Pepsi. His disqualification does not affect the series standings, which saw Jeff Aikey edge Rob Toland by a single point for the tour title. Third through 22nd place finishers will receive checks from IMCA for their increased shares of the Pepsi purse next week. “We find traction control devices of any type to be detrimental to the sport and bad for racing at every level. Companies making these products are bragging that they can’t be detected,” Root said, “but IMCA just proved them wrong. We’re going to do everything we can to educate promoters and tech inspectors in what to look for in this product.” “No other sanctioning body has detected the use of electronic traction control,” he added. “We will continue to do everything possible to prevent this type of product from making its way into IMCA racing.” As part of standard procedure following the post race inspection, the Pepsi winner will receive a new ignition box to replace the one examined by IMCA.
