HESPERIA • Times have been tough for many local families, including the Harpers in Hesperia.

Both Steve Harper and his wife, Ann, were laid off just before the holidays and had to rely on friends, family and strangers this Christmas.

But when they learned about another Hesperia family who had lost their home to a fire last week, they knew they had to do something.

“We have four children and because this is the first year we had to struggle and worry about where Christmas had to come for our kids, I just did not want those children to have to go without, too,” Ann Harper said.

The Harpers live near the Sais family, who lost their home on Seaforth Street and I Avenue just north of Ranchero Street on Dec. 16. Tim Sais was awakened by his son, Caleb, just in time to get both his children out of their burning home. Tim’s wife, Corina, had just left for work when the blaze broke out in the family’s home.

The Sais family received a lot of help from many friends, family and neighbors and the San Bernardino County Fire Department’s holiday charitable organization, Spark of Love — the same organization that gave Christmas gifts to the four Harper children.

The Harper children decided to take some of their new donated toys along with some gently-loved toys and give them to the Sais children.

Bryan Gates, 11, wanted to give little Caleb Sais, 4, a limited edition car that Gates received from Spark of Love.

“My 4-year-old daughter, Makayla, cried when she learned why these kids didn’t have a home and she wanted to give their little girl two of her princess pillows,” Steve Harper said.

Since being laid off, the Harper family has had to make ends meet by going to churches to get food.

“It’s a hard situation to be in, especially during the holidays, but I just wanted to give back for all the help we have gotten from all these organizations this year,” Steve Harper said.
