HOBBY/ STREET STOCK POWER STEERING PUMP
04/01/13 at 10:58am

I ran a KRC power steering pump on the car and it went out on me sat night at VV.  Trying to figure out why.  I run a reduction pully set for the crank and water pump then the power steer pulls off a small pully off the water pump to a larger pully on the power steering pump.  So i don't believe its over spinning the pump but the power steering lines to the box were really really hot.  What do you think the issue could have been?  What pumps do you guys run?

I ran with you Saturday night. What car were you? Anyway, if it was a new pump, I would say it was just bad.

What kind of fluid are you using...I highly recomend using Redline or something similar.  I hope you did not use ATF, this has been known to kill a pump in one night.  Does your set up use a remote resevoir, if so, you need to use a -10 or 5/8" supply line from the resevoir to the pump.  I hope this helps.

I agree -10 supply line. Do not use ATF!!   Use 10wt HYD fluid which is what you get if you buy power steering fluid at the parts store. I have 2 of those pumps if you need one new and one used. PM me if you want. Mike

The pump is the head mount KRC pump.  We use the KRC power steering fluid recommended by KRC.  Also have I believe 5/8 high pressure hydrolic line on both lines.  the lines were really hot when we looked at it after the heat.  Obviously there is an issue and the only thing I keep going back to is the pump just quit but am not ok with that as an answer at this point.

Mopar- I will let you know... I ordered a new one but might pick up another to be on the safe side.

quinn-  I ended up finished 5th coming from the back with no power steering... On one had I am happy with that on the other I know that I was fast enough to run with you guys up in the front of the field for the top 3 at least if not run for the win... Oh well maybe next time!

Ya, I was pretty stoked about run too. First real race on that car in 9 years. And it was pretty close. Had some carb issues and The driver was pretty rusty too. The body getting tire off was kind of a bummer, but now it might be a good time to go aluminum. Might get her below 3500#. Looking forward to running with you again.
