Paupenhausen, Paul Jr, Lynskey, Myers, Robbins scores wins at Antioch Speedway

ANTIOCH, CA (September 28) - It was a night of surprise finishes and side-by-side battles on the 3/8-mile clay oval.

Zack Lynskey of Fairfield made his move on veteran Los Banos driver Eric Rossi as they came out of the second turn with two laps to go in the Wingless Sprint Car main event.

“I didn’t want to follow the leader all race. He went high on the track, so I decided to dive under him,” Lynskey explained.

Jimmy Robbins of Concord scored a win on the fourth turn of the checkered flag lap of the Super Hobby Stock feature. Robbins, riding right behind Petaluma’s Matt While and Paul Hanley saw the two crash each other out of the race while going for the win.

Robbins also surged into the point lead for the division, as former leader Gene Haney of Brentwood finished fifth.

“Matt and Paul passed me clean, and I saw some great racing between them right in front of me,” Robbins said. “Then, I don’t know what happened. A second later I was taking the checkered flag. I’ll take it – a win is a win, even though this one was a gift.”

Brad Myers of Brentwood chased down Kimo “The Flyin’ Hawaiian” Oreta from Vacaville in the Hobby Stock main event. Oreta held a commanding lead, and Myers had to come from the back midway through the race after he and Nick Viscusi III tangled.

“My car was getting warm, and it was starting to fade away a little,” Oreta said. “I gave it all I could, but Brad is a great driver.”

Rookie Nick Baldwin of Oakley continued an impressive run of top finishes as he came in third.

It was a battle of the veteran drivers as Concord’s Mike Gustafson stayed a few feet ahead of Larry Damitz of Vallejo in the Super Stock feature.

“I’ve been working all year to try and get this car running right,” Gustafson said. “We finally got it.”

Damitz agreed.

“I had nothing left to get under him,” Damitz said. “We’ve raced against each other for at least 30 years. He was faster tonight.”

Richard Papenhausen of Chico continued his domination in the Late Model stock car division. Papenhausen scored his third straight win, virtually unchallenged in the feature event.

He will find more competition in this Saturday’s Delta Classic. The Late Model and “Open” Modified stock cars will race for $1500 to win in each division. Joining in are the Wingless Sprint Cars, Hobby Stocks and Dwarf Cars.

Racing begins at 6:30 p.m. Antioch Speedway is located at the Contra Costa Fairgrounds, 1201 W. 10th St. in Antioch. Admission is $14 for adults, $10 for children and $8 for senior citizens. A family four-pack of tickets is $40. Secure parking is available from the fairgrounds for $5.
