Austin DeBlauw wins the final ARP Battle at the Beach for 2014 and Jimmy Crawford gets crowned King of the Beach

VENTURA, CA (October 18) - Saturday night October 18 saw one of the best car counts of the last two seasons at Ventura Raceway. With the Fourth and final Battle at the Beach for VRA Sprint Cars for 2014 headlining the night the fans in attendance witnessed great racing all night long. Racing across the board was very good in our adult and kids classes. Over 100 cars and drivers were signed into the pit Saturday night.

Saturday night featured the fourth and final ARP Battle at the Beach race for 2014. All the top VRA drivers were on hand to go for the very special trophy and added winners purse that goes to the winner of each of these special events. There were three heat races run with wins going to Greg Taylor, A J Bender, and Guy Woodward. Their 30 lap main event was a rough and tumble race that needed four starts to get one lap completed. Kyle Edwards led lap 1 with Greg Taylor getting by on lap two and then leading until a back marker spun in front of him on lap 21 forcing him to stop on the track and go to the rear of the field. Austin DeBlauw then took the lead and led to the finish taking the win and the $1,500 winners check and the special ARP Battle at the Beach Trophy. Jimmy Crawford, who had won two previous races in the series this season, finished fourth to clinch the title of ARP King of the Beach for 2014 and win the $500 ARP Special award and take the special ARP Tiki Trophy. A J Bender finished second followed by new 2014 VRA Sprint Car Champion Kyle Smith and Jimmy Crawford. Kyle Smith clinched the VRA Sprint Car Series Championship Saturday night by ending the night with a 300 point lead over Tom Hendricks with only a maximum possible 260 points left to win on the last race October 25.

VRA Dwarf Cars were back in action Saturday with main event wins going to Bill VanPraag in the Seniors and series point leader Brian Saxton in the Pros. Both drivers drove excellent races to take their wins. In the Seniors VanPraag was followed by point leader, Mike Lewis, Bob Kaufman, Dan Zugar and David Conley. Their heat race win went to David Conley. In the Pros, Brian Saxton took the win over a hard charging Johnny Conley in their 20 lap main. After Saxton and Conley, Shawn Jones, Tom Conley and Mike Neal followed to the finish line. The Pros ran three heat races with wins going to Tim Conley, Johnny Conley and Ricky Lewis. Going into the final event of the year, Mike Lewis leads Bill Van Praag by 200 points in the Seniors and Brian Saxton leads Johnny Conley by 70 points.

NMRA TQ Midgets visited Ventura Raceway Saturday night. Chuck West took the win in the 20 lap main event. Following him to the line were Kenny Wiley, Anthony Lopiccolo, West Evans and Bruce Hiroshima. Their heat race wins went to Chuck West and Bruce Hiroshima. Lopiccolo and Hiroshima entered the race tied for the points championship. Lopiccolo took the championship by his third place finish, two spots ahead of Hiroshima.

The California Lightning Sprints were on hand Saturday night as well. These winged mini sprints always put on exiting racing action on our 1/5 mile oval. Their 20 lap main event started 20 cars and was a hard fought battle between the number 12 of Bobby Michnowicz and Doug Nunes. Nunes was able to get by and go on to take the win followed by Michnowicz and Jeremy Queener. Heat race wins went to Alex Bissett, Jarrett Kramer and Bobby Michnowicz.

Mira Cook took her first win in the Sport Compact class 20 lap main event over Zach Peterson, Trenton Morley and Gary Garvin. Their one heat race went to Gary Garvin. With one race left in their season Zach Peterson leads Jeff Long by 165 points.

Four Mod Lites were on hand for this weeks action. The win in their 20 lap main event went to Mike Neal over point leader, and new 2014 series champion Jeffrey Fry, Rick Granger and Kim Lewis. Rick Granger took their one heat race.

In Junior action Zach Chavez took his first win in Junior Midgets over new 2014 Champion Mike Long, Sandy Brown, Dalton Houghton and Cinnamon Brown.. Sandy Brown took the win in their one heat race. In Superchrger action, 2014 series Champion Sandy Brown took the win over J D Brown, Zac Malone and Dalton Houghton. Piston competition saw Zack Chavez take another win over Dylan Neal, Brandon Velasquez and Jeremiah Wiley. Chavez also took the heat race victory.

Ventura Raceway will be back in action Saturday night October 18 with our final race in the 2014 season. there are several championships still on the line so the night should feature some exciting action.
