Geving Takes Winged 360s; Foulger tops in DIRTcar, Ryland in IMCA

Oval Motorsports
ANTIOCH, CA (April 25) - University of California Davis student and standout Winged 360 Sprint Car driver Alissa Geving maintained her line on the race track to fight off the challenges of Justin Sanders to win the Northern All Stars main event Saturday night (April 25) at Antioch Speedway.

Troy Foulger of Martinez drove the Oakley-based Billy Bowers DIRTcar Late Model Stock car to his second win of the season. Jim Perry III of Concord drove a nine-year-old race car to a win in the Econo 360 Wingless Sprint Car division feature.

In International Motor Contest Association (IMCA) SportMod competition, Brentwood’s Fred Ryland posted his 11th win of the season and maintained his first place position in the national point standings. David Teves of Concord was untouchable in the Dwarf Car feature event.

Geving Refused to Lose

Unwilling to give up her line, even when dad Gary suggested running higher on the race track, Geving, of Penngrove, scored her third career Antioch Speedway win.

“My dad said try running up on the berm,” Geving smiled in victory lane. “I felt more comfortable running the middle.”

Sanders, from Watsonville, flew into second, riding with his right rear wheel against the third and fourth turn wall lap after lap in an attempt to catch Geving.

“I have to admit I was nervous having him up there, trying to pass me,” Geving said while being hugged by her exuberant car owner Brett Lay. Geving is the third generation driver in her family, her grandfather Le Roy being a legend at the former Vallejo Speedway. She is majoring in Animal Sciences at the university.

Foulger Fast in Late Model Stock Car Debut

Four-time modified stock car champion Foulger moved up the wildly fast DIRTcar Late Model Stock Car division this season, and now has two wins in four outings.

Two laps after the start of the feature, Antioch’s Chester Kniss tangled with Morgan Hill’s Jeff Decker in the fourth turn to bring out the caution.

Foulger took the lead on the restart, and fought off continuous challenges from Chico’s Richard Papenhausen for the remaining 18 laps.
“Billy Bowers has given me a great car, and Antioch Speedway’s

surface is one of the greatest tracks of all time,” Foulger said after jumping to the roof of his racer. “The track was smooth, fast and challenging. Turns three and four were slick, and turns one and two were hooked up with traction. It is a thrill too great to describe to drive on this track.”

Papenhausen tried every trick in the book to pass Foulger. Decker fought his way all the way from last to finish third. Hayward’s Danny Malfatti and Mike Hynes of Suisun City were fourth and fifth – their best finishes in the division this season.

Teves Worked the Bugs Out

Teves toiled all winter to build his new Dwarf Car, and promised last week he would give division champ Danny Wagner of Bay Point a run for the money. He did just that during the caution filled Dwarf Car feature.

“I guess we got the bugs worked out of the new car and we’re good to go,” Teves said in victory lane. “We made changes that did not work, and the crew worked all day to figure out why.”

Teves took the top line and got a good run off of the corner on every restart. He didn’t let off as he headed into the first and second turn. Wagner worked his way up from 10th starting position to challenge Teves by the halfway point in the event.

“He just got there first,” Wagner said of Teves taking the best line on the track. “And then he was gone.”

Mike Corsaro of Tracy finished third after an early challenge of the leaders. Adam Teves, son of winner David, finished fourth. Kevin Miraglio of Pleasanton completed the top five.

Old Car Comes Back for A Win

A thrilling conclusion to the Econo 360 Sprint Car feature saw leaders Alan Miranda of Fairfield and Cody Fendley of El Dorado spin as they raced through the third turn towards the checkered flag. Perry was right behind the leaders, and scooted low on the track to grab the win.

“It feels great to win with a low budget car,” Perry smiled in victory lane. “It has 10 year old shocks and a very inexpensive engine. The car hadn’t been raced since 2009 prior to this season.”

Perry built his winning wingless sprint car back in 2006, when the series was meant as an affordable alternative to winged sprint cars. This season, the Econo 360 Wingless Sprint Car division was born to again make the open wheeled cars affordable.

Rookie Marcus Smith of Tracy finished, chased by Al Ghioroso, Jr. of Newark and Zachary Kavert of Sacramento.

“I knew if I stayed close to Jim I’d have a shot at doing something good,” a very happy Smith said.

Ryland Keeps His Eye on the Prize

Fred Ryland passed his wife, Patti, and Chuck Golden of Concord after a seventh lap restart in the IMCA SportMod feature. Golden maintained second as Paul Mulder of Pleasanton worked his way up to third before the finish. Patti Ryland and Watsonville’s Al Sotomayor comprised the top five.

“The engine was just not running right in the heat race,” Ryland said in victory lane. “Our crew got the problem fixed just in time for the feature.”
