Parker nets A&W Night at the Fair victory at Manitowoc County Fair Speedway
Manitowoc, WI (August 24) – On the second night of racing hosted by the Manitowoc County Fair, a breezy, warm evening greeted racing fans as they entered the stands on EWSC's A&W Night at the Fair. After the storms the prior evening, the track crew did some great work getting the racing surface back in shape for a great show.
Late Models With many of the same drivers in the field as the Kick Off Race the evening before, Eric Michaels (Cleveland) and Nick Cochart (Casco) would lead the Late Models to the track. Michaels would suffer a mechanical issue and pull to the infield on the parade lap. After readjusting the field, they would take the green and Bob Cullen (Chilton) jumped out front, followed by Cochart, Joe Rueter (Shawano), Jim Schmidt (Cleveland), and Pete Parker (Kaukauna). Schmidt and Parker would quickly move to 2nd & 3rd behind Cullen, and on Lap 6 Parker passed Cullen for the lead. Both Rick and Russ Scheffler (Waukesha), who had raced similar conditions the night before, were moving up in a hurry. At the midway point it was still Parker out front, Russ Scheffler, Craig Schueffner (Sheboygan Falls), Cullen and Schmidt in the top 5. As the laps ticked off, the leaders started to get deeper into lapped cars. At five laps to go, Parker still maintained his lead over Russ, followed by Schueffner, Rick Scheffler, and Cullen. Parker would hold on to take his first win of the year at EWSC, followed by Russ, Schueffner, Rick, Schmidt, Tim Buhler (Glenbeulah), Cullen, Ron Stroika (Mukwonago), Randy Markwardt (Sheboygan), and Reuter. Hard Charger honors split by Russ and Rick passing 7 each, Buhler with 6, and Parker, Schueffner, and Schmidt with 4 each. Great job done by all drivers as they put in another green to checkered race on a challenging track. 360 Sprintcars With B Main transfer cars Brian Portschy (Plymouth), Lance Fassbender (Burnett), Randy Brunette (Chilton), Tony Wondra (Campbellsport), Don Kiel (Whitelaw), and Tim Haddy (Waupan) joining the back of the A Main lineup, the field was pushed out to the track. Jeremy Schultz (Beaver Dam) and Shane Wenninger (Kewaskum) sat on the 360 Sprintcars front row, followed by Al Schlafer (Sussex) and Robbie Pribnow (Mayville). The drivers did a four-wide salute to the fans, and then settled in to take the green flag. Coming to the green, however, Scotty Thiel (Sheboygan) flipped on the berm in Turn 4 bringing out the red flag. Thiel was ok, but would be done for the night. The lineup was reset and the start was attempted again, and this time went off without a hitch. Schultz would lead the first lap, followed by Wenninger, Schlafer, Pribnow, and Ben Schmidt (Howards Grove). The track required smooth driving techniques to move forward and many drivers were doing just that. Kiel brought out another red flag on Lap 10 with a violent flip into the Turn 2 rail. He would emerge unhurt, but the same could not be said for his car, which was done for the night. On the attempt at a restart, Danny Schlafer (Sussex) spun out triggering another caution. The second attempt at a restart produced the final caution of the event, as Randy Sippel (Elkhart Lake) and Pete Ostrowski (East Troy) got together, Sippel would continue, Pete would not. Schultz let the field down to the restart, with Schlafer, Schmidt, Kyle Marten (Sheboygan Falls) and Wenninger. Al got around Schultz on the next lap, along with Schmidt and Marten. At the midway point it was still Al, Schmidt, Marten, TJ Luedke (Plymouth) and Eliot Kulow (Howards Grove in the top 5. There was a lot of changing of positions behind him, but Al held Schmidt off for his first win in Manitowoc this year. They were followed across by Luedke, Kulow, Marten, Schultz, Brandon McMullen (Plymouth), Wenninger, Paul Pokorski (West Bend) and Brunette. Grand Nationals Tyler Kulow (New Holstein) sat on the pole of the Grand National Feature, joined by Paul Perronne (Plymouth). Behind them rode the cars of Mark Kuhfuss (Sheboygan Falls) and Chris Baumann (Elkhart Lake). On the drop of the green, it was Larry Zirbel (Iron Ridge) who got through the pack from his 6th starting spot to take the lead, followed by Kulow, Baumann, Don Schumacher (Oconomowoc) and Brian Cesar (Sheboygan). The track was challenging this night, and the drivers were choosing their lines carefully and threading their way through the pack. Perronne would head to the pits after Lap 4 and would not return. Ryan MINSTER (Sheboygan), and Brian Gilles (Plymouth) were coming hard, one on top and one on the berm. On Lap 8 Logan Rhode (Manitowoc) would get around Zirbel for the lead after climbing from his 8th starting position. Chad Vetting (Valders) and Kevin Naidl (Whitelaw) had chased Rhode to the front and at the mid way point it was Rhode, Zirbel, Vetting, Naidl, and Cesar rounding out the top 5. Lap 13 produced the only caution taking away Rhodes huge lead, as Tyler Kulow looped his ride in Turn 2 and would continue on at the back of the pack. Leading the restart was Rhode, and attempting to chase him down were Zirbel, Vetting, Naidl, and Cesar. Zirbel would slide to the infield on Lap 16 with a mechanical issue, opening the door for Gilles and Minster to jump into the battle up front. Behind Rhode, Vetting and Gilles were putting on a clinic, Vetting on the high line and Gilles hugging the bottom. The 7 would finally get him on Lap 18, and at the checkers it was Rhode with the win, Gilles, Vetting, Cesar, Naidl, Minster, Dave Gauger Jr. (Two Rivers), Shumacher, Kevin Lubach (Plymouth), and Baumann. Hard Charger for the race goes to Minster for passing 10 cars, honorable mention to Gilles with 9 and Rhode and Vetting with 7. Hobby Stocks The Hobby Stock Feature was led out by the cars of Jeff Bender (Plymouth) and Jerry Brickner (Mishicot), followed by Trevor Schmidt and Bradley Ruh of Elkhart Lake. Schmidt would wrestle the lead away from Bender on the first lap, with Ruh and Michael Plate Jr (Valders) tucking in behind them for third & fourth. The dry, slick track made for some interesting lines as the drivers fought for traction on the 1/3 mile oval. Ray Fuller (Manitowoc) departed with mechanical issues after only 1 Lap, and on the second Steven Gretz suffered a flat tire but would later return to the track. Ruh passed Schmidt for the lead on Lap 4, while Michael Gilson (Elkhart Lake) was moving up to battle Bender for position. At the mid way point it was Ruh, Schmidt, Bender, Gilson, and Plate Jr. rounding out the top 5. Laps ticked off quickly as this race also ran caution free, with Schmidt getting back around Ruh on Lap 9 and holding on for the win. He was followed by Ruh, Gilson, Bender, Testrote, Brickner, Plate Jr., Gretz, and Fuller.
