Kankakee County Speedway hopes to run it's streak to a perfect 18 for 18 this season

KANKAKEE, Ill. - With tomorrow night's (August 26th) projected beautiful forecast in store, dare I say, Kankakee County Speedway will run it's streak to a perfect 18 for 18 this season in shows run without a single rain out. I don't know of another track in Illinois, and certainly not Indiana, that has been as fortunate with rain fall, track prep, and getting races in like Promoter Tom Smith and his crew have been so far this season. This serves as a testament to the dedication of the track crew, racers, and fans alike that Kankakee has been building a reputation as the one place in Illinois that makes every effort possible to get racing in despite the risks of low fan count and smaller than expected car counts.

With today's at-your-fingertips technology, fans and drivers alike have access to up to the minute weather information, and often times make quick decisions based on what they "visually see or hear from others". But make no mistake, despite some mornings when even track officials thought "there's no way we can race tonight" the show has gone on. Perhaps even more surprisingly, is the fact that Kankakee County Speedway has consistently drawn crowds of around 1,000 average each week this season, so Promoter Tom Smith has obviously been doing something right to get things turned around at what was a stagnant facility just a few years ago. "We understand drivers spend sometimes several hundred dollars just to travel to and from the track, and fans are spending their hard earned dollars doing the same", said promoter Tom Smith, "and I really hate to see all of them make that kind of effort without us giving twice the effort. It would be easy to just call a night of racing off, and be lazy for the night, but we're not the only ones affected by rain outs. Our local business community thrives when we have racing here on Friday nights so that factors in as well", he added.

With eight scheduled programs left on the docket for 2011, could Kankakee possibly run it's unblemished mark versus Mother Nature to a perfect 26 - 0? "We've definitely been blessed by Mother Nature this year with the weather, any promoter in Illinois would agree to that", said PR Director Paul Bayne. "Last year was quite the opposite. I guess this is just a case of this has been our year as far as the weather goes. Next year could be totally doom and gloom", he added. "We'll just have to continue taking it one week at a time and take what Mother Nature throws at us".
