Knaub Claims 50-Lap Susquehanna Showdown for Second Year in a Row at SSP on Sunday Night
Newberrytown, PA (September 25) – Dover’s Gene Knaub won the 50-lap Late Model feature event presented by Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic at the Susquehanna Speedway Park on Sunday night. The event originally scheduled for Saturday night was pushed back to Sunday night when Friday’s qualifying night was postponed due to rain. York Haven’s Daryl Sipe won the 30-lap Road Warrior World Championship. Carmen Perigo Jr. claimed the Super Sportsman victory for the second year in a row as well. Dave Socks won the makeup Super Sportsman feature from June 11 that was run earlier in the evening. Mike Potts picked up the Four Cylinder Stock Car feature win on Saturday night..
Pole sitter, Gene Knaub grabbed the lead from the start with Chris Knopp taking the runner-up quickly after starting fourth. Knaub controlled the lead from start-to-finish to pick up his second straight Susquehanna Showdown victory. Knopp never challenged for the lead but stayed within striking distance the entire race and finished second, five car lengths behind Knaub. Bernie Beard started third and finished third after 50 laps. Chaz Walls and Chase Billet finished fourth and fifth respectively. Chase Billet and Jake Jones split the “Hard Charger Award” by picking up 10 positions to finish 5th and 8th places respectively. Brad Shank won the B-Main event for the Late Models. The Late Model Tire Changing Contest presented by Miller’s Racing Parts was won by the crew of Jake Jones.
Carmen Perigo started fifth and took the top spot on lap 19 from polesitter and early leader Dave Berkheimer. At the finish, Perigo took the checkered flag over Berkheimer with Russ Mitten finishing third. Jay Fannasy finished fourth with Steve Wilbur rounding out the top five. Heat race wins went to Chris Meleason, Leroy Martin and Berkheimer. Greg Robinson won the consolation race.
Daryl Sipe started on the pole and led all 30 laps to win the Road Warriors World Championship. Chad Weaver and Daryl Hanson swapped spots continuously at the end with Weaver taking the runner-up spot over Hanson. Hanson started 18th and finished third. Jim Jacobs and Curt McDade rounded out the top five. Sipe and Christopher Holland won their respective heat races. On Friday night, Mike Potts won the 25-lap Four Cylinder Stock Car feature over Ronnie Buck. Potts took the lead on lap 4 when early leader Mike Buckley. John Stoll Jr. finished third, followed by Jeffrey Arnsberger and Calvin Redding. Buckley won the sole heat race for the small eight car field.
In Late Model action on Friday night, heat race wins went to Justin Ehrhart, Ashley Barrett, Grant Adams and Gene Knaub. The Hammaker’s Racing Engine 10-lap Cash Dash was won by Knaub, earning him $250.00 and the pole position for the 50 lapper.
Racing action returns to the Big Track at SSP for the popular 2-day 8th Miller’s Racing Parts Fall Classic on Friday, October 21 and Saturday, October 22 featuring the Street Stocks, Xtreme Stock Cars and the Four Cylinder Stock Cars. The 50-lap Street Stock Championship Event will pay $2,500 to the winner. On Friday night, October 21, the program will consist of warm-ups and qualifying heat races for Street Stocks, Xtreme Stock Cars and Four Cylinder Stock Cars.
