Lear Hits Pay Dirt in Kevin Cooke Memorial Friday at Potomac
Alvey Continues to Win, Scores Street Stock Sixth

by Doug Watson
Budds Creek, MD- Severna Park MD's Kyle Lear scored his second feature win of the season in last Friday nights 25-lap "Kevin Cooke" Memorial Limited Late Model event at Potomac Speedway. The win for Lear, the current Potomac Limited late Model points leader, was his career 15th at the speedway and netted him a cool $1222 pay day.

Former Potomac Late Model champion Daryl Hills and Robbie Emory shared the front row for the start of the event, with Hills surging into the race lead as the field raced off turn-two. As Hills lead, 3rd-starting Kyle Lear tucked into second on lap-2 and set his sights on Hills. As Lear was challenging Hills for the top-spot, Derrick Quade and 15th-starting Jonathon DeHaven made it a four-way battle for the race lead. As the front foursome raced door to door, Lear was able to break free as he snared the race lead from Hills on the 15th-circuit and would then survive a lap-20 caution to take the win by 3 car-lengths at the finish over eventual runner-up Derrick Quade. "This is a big win for us tonight." Lear stated in Potomac's victory lane. "We had our car set-up to run the bottom tonight and the deeper we got into this race the track really came to us and this car just got better and better." The caution that was waved on lap-20 set the stage for another epic Potomac finish. "I saw Derrick's number on the scoreboard and I knew he was coming." Lear quipped. "I just kept the car on the bottom because I knew if he was going to pass me he'd have to use the top and there wasn't much up there, but it was a lot of fun racing with those guy's tonight." Hills settled for third, DeHaven was fourth with 12th-starting Jimmy Jesmer Jr. rounding out the top-five. Heats for the 24-cars on hand went to Lear, Hills and Emory.

Darren Alvey continued his dream season as he rolled to his second win in a row and 6th of the season in the 16-lap Street Stock feature. Alvey started on the pole and would lead all 16-circuits to post the win after a spirited duel with eventual runner-up Mike Latham. Mike Raleigh was third, Mike Franklin took fourth with Troy Kassiris completing the top-five. Franklin was the heat winner.

Sam Archer collected his fourth win of the season in the 15-lap Hobby Stock feature. Archer, who started 2nd, blew into the race lead at the start and would lead every lap to score the win. Jonathon Raley was second, Brian Adkins was third, point leader Jamie Sutphin was fourth with Ed Pope Jr. filling the front-five. Heats went to Archer and Adkins.

Michael Pfaff, fresh off his first-career U-Car win at Winchester the week prior, scored his first-ever win at Potomac feature win in the 15-lap U-Car main. Pfaff lead all but one-lap of the race to score the breakthrough win. Mark Pollard was second, Billy Hill third, point leader Erica Bailey was fourth with Ryan Clement taking fifth. Hill was the heat winner.

Defending track champion Nabil Guffey scored his first win of the season in the nightcap 15-lap Strictly Stock feature. Guffey started on the pole and jumped into the top-spot on the first-lap and would never look back as he would take the win by a wide margin over John Hardesty. Ray Bucci was third, JJ Silvious took fourth with Paul Jones completing the top-five. Heats went to Bucci and Ed Pope Sr.
