Bloomquist Charges Through The Field At Eldora Speedway To Claim Fourth Career World 100 Victory
Tennessee Racer Overcomes Penalty to Score $47,000 Crown Jewel Triumph

DIRTcar Racing PR
ROSSBURG, OH (September 6) - Nothing could stop Scott Bloomquist from claiming his fourth World 100 trophy Saturday night at Eldora Speedway. Not a lap-19 penalty that dropped him from the lead to the tail of the field. Not a steady Dale McDowell looking for an Eldora crown jewel sweep. And not slower traffic during the race's closing laps.

Bloomquist's No. 0 Sweet-Bloomquist machine was unstoppable at the historic half-mile oval as it carried the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Famer through the field for a $47,000 victory in the 44th running of the DIRTcar UMP-sanctioned event.

"I believe everybody got to witness the fastest race car in the world right there," Bloomquist, 50, of Mooresburg, Tenn., told the Eldora Speedway crowd, which for once was nearly unanimous in applauding a driver who usually polarizes fans. "We talked this week in the shop; I told everybody I was gonna win this race this weekend and here it is."

Advancing from his fifth starting spot, Bloomquist first took the lead from McDowell on lap 19 only to be penalized for an unapproved window net and sent to the tail of the field when the caution waved on the following lap.

That only made things more interesting.

Bloomquist stormed back to the front and retook the lead from McDowell on lap 72 of the 100-lap race. He continued his torrid pace through the remaining distance, again knifing through traffic until he crossed the finish line with a half-track advantage.

McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga., settled for the runner-up finish while 22nd-starting Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., made a late charge to finish third. Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., and Matt Miller of Whitehouse, Ohio, rounded out the race's top five finishers.

Bloomquist was penalized for using a Lexan-supported window net. After opposing crew members protested that the piece could assist aerodynamics, officials ruled the window net was an unapproved device. It was removed from Bloomquist's car and he was sent to the tail of the field for the restart.

That didn't faze Bloomquist. Restarting in the 29th position, he quickly began his march back to the front. He worked his way into the top 15 by lap 35 and was up to eighth by halfway. He cracked the top five on lap 55 and after grabbing fourth a few laps later, was elevated to second when 21st-starting Mason Zeigler of Chalk Hill, Pa., spun while attempting to take the lead from McDowell on lap 61 and collected third-running Jimmy Mars of Menomonie, Wis.

Bloomquist made sure the Eldora crowd new his plan under the ensuing caution by pumping his fist and making the cowabunga hand signal out of the driver's window of his race car as he drove down the front straightaway.

"The car was just so good and I was so confident," said Bloomquist, who scored his sixth consecutive top-10 finish in the World 100. "I knew there was plenty of laps left and I knew the car would work anywhere on the racetrack. Anyone that would try to run the bottom like I did, they could get in there, but as soon as they'd throttle they'd push out of it, which would just leave me the whole racetrack."

If not for Bloomquist, McDowell, 48, would have been the star of the show. Starting from the outside pole, he pulled his Team Dillon Racing Warrior ahead of polesitter Mike Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., on the start of the race and controlled the early laps.

He gave up the lead after a lengthy side-by-side battle with Bloomquist, but was quickly reestablished to the point after Bloomquist's penalty. McDowell again pulled away through the race's middle portions until Zeigler began making his bid for the top spot.

McDowell was given a brief relive when Zeigler got into turn three too hard on lap 61 and spun his machine to avoid making contact with the leader. But that only cleared the way for Bloomquist to move to second for the restart and to eventually take the lead 11 laps later.

In falling one position short of his second World 100 victory, McDowell, who claimed a $100,000 payday in Eldora's Dirt Late Model Dream in June, missed out on becoming just the third driver to win both of Eldora's crown jewel events in the same season.

"I think I overworked my tire running that high side," McDowell said. "I was just free - just a little bit too free. But that's part of it. We'll go to work a little bit and try to come back here in June and repeat the Dream maybe."

Bloomquist's charge through the field was the main highlight on a night that featured plenty of passing around Eldora's high banks. Besides the charges by Bloomquist, Zeigler and Owens, Terry Phillips of Springfield, Mo., charged from 17th to ninth, Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., advanced from 29th to 10th and John Blankenship of Williamson, W.Va., moved from 32nd to 12th.

The racy track surface didn't go unnoticed by drivers, including the victor.

"This is the best Eldora I've ever seen," said Bloomquist, who claimed his first World 100 trophy in 1988. "I gotta take my hat off for everyone that worked on (the track). You can see it's from the top to the bottom wall. I know there was a few times I wasn't sure if I wasn't rubbing the inside wall with the left front."

The main event was slowed by four cautions. The first was the lap-19 yellow that waved when Jared Landers of Batesville, Ark., slowed. Heat race winner Jackie Boggs of Grayson, Ky., slowed to bring out a lap-30 caution and Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., dropped from the fifth spot to cause a lap-53 yellow. The final caution was for Zeigler's lap-61 spin that collected Mars.

Davenport & Miller Claim 25-Lap Victories During Eldora Speedway’s Second Night Of World 100 Preliminary Action

DIRTcar Racing
ROSSBURG, Ohio (September 5) - Jonathan Davenport and Matt Miller added their names to the list of likely contenders for Eldora Speedway's coveted World 100 globed trophy by claiming $5,000 victories Friday evening during the second night of preliminary action for the 44th annual World 100.

With the event's 120-car field split in half by time-trial results, Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., led every lap of the first of two Twin 25-lap DIRTcar UMP-sanctioned A-Mains to claim his first career Eldora Speedway victory. Miller, the Whitehouse, Ohio, driver who won Eldora's Dirt Late Model Dream in 2005, took the lead on lap 13 of the second A-Main and led the remaining distance to add another accomplishment to his stellar Eldora Speedway resume.

Davenport and Miller will both attempt to parlay their impressive preliminary performances into a crown jewel triumph when Eldora host the $47,000-to-win World 100 finale on Saturday.

Both drivers were tested in claiming their Friday night victories. After advancing from third to first on the opening lap of the feature for odd-numbered qualifiers, Davenport withstood a mid-race challenge from Eldora veteran Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn., amid traffic, and later pulled away after a late-race restart.

The victory was a welcomed breakthrough for Davenport, who has been plagued by poor luck in his recent trips to Eldora.

"This is definitely big. Even though it's against half the field, we held off one of the fastest guys here all weekend," said Davenport, who drives the AES Racing Longhorn Chassis for car owners Kevin and Lee Roy Rumley. "It was good for us to get this win and finally get the monkey off our back we've had for so long here at these big races."

Bloomquist, a three-time World 100 winner, settled for second with fellow former World 100 winners Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, Iowa, and Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., taking third and fourth respectively. Chris Madden of Gray Court, S.C., was fifth.

In claiming the main event for even-numbered qualifiers, Miller had to outduel retiring driver and cancer survivor Randy Korte of Highland, Ill., who was gunning for an emotional victory in his final visit to the historic half-mile oval. The two front-row starters put on a thrilling performance with Miller holding off a resurgent Korte in the closing laps.

"My buddy Randy there, I know it's his last time and I hate to take it from him," said Miller, who drives a Rick Delong-owned Rocket Chassis. "But it's a race and we need it as bad as he does."

Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., ran just behind Miller and Korte for most of the race in finishing third, while R.J. Conley of Wheelersburg, Ohio, and Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., rounded out the top five.

With Saturday night's six 15-lap Dream heat races aligned by each driver's best lap time from the two rounds of qualifying, Jeff Babcock's fast time on Friday earned him overall fast time honors for the World 100 weekend. Babcock of Wayne, Ohio, and second-fast qualifier Brandon Overton of Appling, Ga., are guaranteed starting spots in Saturday's World 100 A-Main thanks to the two provisionals that go to the two fastest qualifiers who fail to make the A-Main through a heat race or last chance race.

Babcock's fast time earned him a visit to the Eldora stage during Friday's program to spin the inversion wheel. It stopped on '6,' setting up a 36-car invert and leaving Babcock starting sixth in a heat race that will transfer the top-three finishers to the World 100.

The World 100 weekend will conclude on Saturday night with World 100 heat races, last chance races and the 100-lap, $47,000-to-win A-Main. The first heat is scheduled to get under way at 7 p.m.

McDowell & Owens Open Eldora Speedway's World 100 Weekend With 25-lap Preliminary Feature Victories

DIRTcar Racing
ROSSBURG, Ohio. (September 4) - Experience ruled the night at Eldora Speedway on Thursday with former World 100 and Dirt Late Model Dream winners Dale McDowell and Jimmy Owens both claiming preliminary feature victories during the opening night of the 44th annual World 100.

Fresh off his Dream victory in June, McDowell, 48, of Chickamauga, Ga., claimed the first of Thursday's two 25-lap A-Mains with a flag-to-flag performance in the caution-free race. Owens, 42, of Newport, Tenn., charged from the 14th starting spot in the second 25-lapper and overtook Chris Madden of Gray Court, S.C., on his way to victory.

McDowell and Owens, who both earned $5,000 paydays for their UMP DIRTcar-sanctioned victories, will look for even more Big E success as the historic track hosts another preliminary night on Friday and the $47,000-to-win World 100 finale on Saturday.

For Thursday's action, the event's 117 entries were split in half by time-trial results with the two groups then completing separate programs of heat races, B-Mains and A-Mains. Claiming the main event for odd-numbered qualifiers, McDowell held off a late charge by eighth-starting Randy Weaver of Crossville, Tenn. Polesitter Gregg Satterlee of Indiana, Pa., finished third with 12th-starting Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, Iowa, and Jimmy Mars of Menomonie, Wis., rounding out the top five.

McDowell will look to become just the third driver to claim both the Dream and the World 100 in the same the season by parlaying his opening night success into a crown jewel victory in Saturday's World 100 finale.

"I think the race car's pretty good, hopefully," said McDowell, who claimed his first World 100 victory in 2005. "There's a lot of good racers here. There's a lot of ingredients that has to go into having a good night. All these guys are professionals and it could be anyone's night (on Saturday). We just hope we put all the pieces together to make it ours."

In the feature for even-numbered qualifiers, Owens recovered from his poor qualifying effort to score an impressive victory over Kent Robinson of Bloomington, Ind. Early front-runners Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., and Madden both faded late in the race in finishing third and fourth respectively. Frank Heckenast Jr. of Frankfort, Ill., was fifth.

Jeff Babcock of Wayne, Ohio, led the opening five laps after starting from outside the front row, but he slipped to eighth at the finish of a race slowed by a single caution flag.

With each driver's best qualifying lap from Thursday and Friday determine starting positions in Saturday's World 100 heat races, Owens will not only look for another prelim victory on Friday but also a much better qualifying effort.

"We ran into some problems hot lapping and qualifying that put us behind the eight ball all night long. Hopefully tomorrow we'll get a better qualifying run in," said Owens, whose two World 100 victories came in 2007 and 2011. "I think we've got the car to (win Saturday's finale) if circumstances go our way and we get a good qualifying run in and get in through our heat."
