Owens Tops McCreadie & Bloomquist For Sixth-Career Bad Boy Buggies World of Outlaws World Finals Victory
Veteran Tennessee Racer Earns $12,050 in World of Outlaws Late Model Series Season Finale

WoOLMS PR
CONCORD, N.C. (November 8) - Jimmy Owens found himself in a familiar location Saturday night at The Dirt Track at Charlotte. The winningest driver in Bad Boy Buggies World of Outlaws World Finals history stood on the Victory Lane stage at Charlotte yet again after winning a wild World of Outlaws Late Model Series A-Main at the 4/10-mile oval.

Owens, 42, of Newport, Tenn., came out on top of a tight back-and-forth battle with Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., and Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn., midway through Saturday's 50-lap race to earn $12,050 for his record sixth World Finals victory. Owens' 10th-career WoO LMS triumph came in front of a sellout crowd as the national tour concluded its season at Charlotte's prestigious three-day event.

"It's awesome to come here and get this win," said Owens, who claimed his third WoO LMS victory of the season. "This is a really big race for us because there's always a big crowd and there's always stiff competition here. These are the best drivers in the country and to beat them never gets old."

Owens' victory gave Club 29 Race Cars a sweep of the weekend's two WoO LMS A-Mains at Charlotte. Friday's race was claimed by Club 29 founder and house car driver Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., who wrapped up his third WoO LMS championship with his record 17th series victory of the season.

Lanigan, who finished fifth in Saturday's A-Main, was also on the Victory Lane stage Saturday night celebrating his season title and the $100,000 champion's paycheck.

"It's been just a unbelievable year on the series," said Lanigan, who launched Club 29 Race Cars this season with veteran setup guru Ronny Stuckey. "The cars were phenomenal this weekend with a win and a top five and Jimmy winning the other one. It's just unbelievable."

Owens crossed the finish line 1.193 seconds ahead in his Reece Monument-sponsored Club 29 Race Car while McCreadie drove his Sweeteners Plus Rocket Chassis around Bloomquist late in the race to finish second. Bloomquist was third in his self-designed Sweet-Bloomquist Race Car with Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., fourth in his Moyer Extreme by Longhorn Chassis just ahead of Lanigan.

After slipping back to fourth early in the race, the second-starting Owens put himself back in contention when he moved by Madden for third on lap 20. Just as the sixth-starting McCreadie began to catch pole-starting Bloomquist, Owens caught both cars to make it a three-car battle for the lead.

Bloomquist and McCreadie went back and forth for the top spot on both sides of the halfway mark as McCreadie took the point on lap 24 only to give it back on the next lap. All the while, Owens was lurking just behind the two leaders and at times making it three wide for the lead.

McCreadie finally cleared Bloomquist on lap 27 and began to edge away as Bloomquist continued to fight heavy pressure from Owens' No. 20 machine. Owens finally took the second spot from Bloomquist on lap 31 and quickly reeled in McCreadie as he struggled with heavy lapped traffic.

Once he caught McCreadie, Owens wasted little time making his bid for the lead. With a pair of lapped cars separating him from McCreadie, Owens split the side-by-side slower machines entering turn three on lap 33 and continued his charge to pull alongside McCreadie in turn four. A bobble by the high-running McCreadie gave Owens the break he needed to pull ahead at the completion of the lap.

Owens never looked back from there, pulling away as the track's bottom groove began to become noticeably faster than the top. Bloomquist and McCreadie both took shots at Owens as the frontrunners ran through traffic in the closing laps, but Owens remained steady and pulled away from each challenge.

"I was just kind of taking it easy trying to bide my time a little bit," Owens said. "The harder I ran the car, the better it got. We just kept getting better and better. I didn't think we had enough for Scott, but McCreadie got in there and got Scott off that bottom. A lot of things just went our way and we were able to pull it out and get the win."

McCreadie's runner-up finish capped off a three-win season on the WoO LMS that landed the 2006 series champion third in the final series standings. The 40-year-old veteran racer appeared to be in control of the race after taking command just after the halfway point, but his high line gave way and allowed Owens to close and make the winning pass.

"I felt good and made some moves on (Bloomquist), but Jimmy came along just as that little strip of rubber was starting to lay," said McCreadie, who was denied what would have been his first-career Late Model victory at the World Finals. "I didn't know the rubber was down there. I was trying to make my hay up on the top and ride what got me to the lead, but he got us."

In settling for third, Bloomquist, the 2004 WoO LMS champion who now competes on the tour part time, finished the season without a victory in 11 WoO LMS races entered, marking just the second time since the tour's modern era began in 2004 that he's failed to win a series race. His only previous season without a WoO LMS triumph came in 2006 when he entered only four series races.

"The car was really good, but just not quite good enough," the 50-year-old Bloomquist said after notching his eighth top-five WoO LMS finish on the season. "We got a little bit loose, which made it really hard on us to get off the bottom. We'd hit the crumbs and stuff and just didn't have what it took."

Bub McCool of Vicksburg, Miss., advanced from the 12th starting spot to finish sixth with Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga., seventh. Friday's runner-up Chris Madden of Gray Court, S.C., was eighth, while double-dipping Donny Schatz of Fargo, N.D., finished ninth just after wrapping up his championship-winning season on the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series. WoO LMS championship points runner-up Rick Eckert or York, Pa., rounded out the top 10 finishers.

The race was slowed by two early cautions. The first appeared with nine laps complete when heat race winner Billy Moyer Jr. of Batesville, Ark., spun from the fourth position. The yellow flag again waved one lap later when Mason Zeigler of Chalk Hill, Pa., slowed in turn four, spurring a pileup that collected Eric Wells of Hazard, Ky., Austin Hubbard of Seaford, Del., and Ricky Thornton Jr. of Chandler, Pa.

Wells of Hazard, Ky., ended up 22nd in the final rundown, leaving him tied for fifth in the final WoO LMS points standings with Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa., who finished 15th in Saturday's race. Frank will be awarded the fifth spot by virtue of a tiebreaker, which per WoO LMS rules was determined by which driver had the most runner-up finishes since neither driver won a WoO LMS race this season.

Frank Heckenast Jr. of Frankfort, Ill., finished 23rd in Saturday's A-Main, but he had plenty of reason to celebrate after wrapping up the $10,000 WoO LMS Rookie of the Year Award. Heckenast, along with Lanigan and the rest of the WoO LMS regulars, will be honored during the tour's annual Night of Champions banquet on Sunday night at the Great Wolf Lodge in Concord.

Lanigan Clinches Third World of Outlaws Late Model Series Championship With Thrilling Victory At The Dirt Track at Charlotte
Kentucky Driver Claims Friday's World Finals Opener With Dramatic Final-Lap Pass

WoOLMS PR
CONCORD, N.C. (November 7) - Darrell Lanigan didn't need to complete a dramatic final-lap pass to clinch his third World of Outlaws Late Model Series championship Friday night at The Dirt Track at Charlotte, but he wasn't only racing for a championship.

Held at bay for the majority of Friday's 50-lap WoO LMS A-Main, Lanigan, 44, of Union, Ky., used a determined charge into the finale corner to sweep around leader Chris Madden in traffic on his way to a thrilling victory at one of the year's biggest Dirt Late Model events. Adding to an already illustrious season, Lanigan earned a $12,650 payday in the opening round of Charlotte's eighth annual Bad Boy Buggies World of Outlaws World Finals.

Lanigan, who was virtually assured of claiming the WoO LMS championship just by entering the national tour's season-ending doubleheader at Charlotte, officially clinched the 2014 series championship with his record 17th WoO LMS victory of the season.

"This is unbelievable to come here and win in front of all these people," an excited Lanigan told the near-capacity crowd during his Victory Lane interview. "Helluva crowd here even with the cold weather. I want to thank everybody in the stands. I hope we put on a good show for you guys because I'm telling you I drove my butt off."

Madden of Gray Court, S.C., settled for second, finishing a scant 0.088 seconds behind Lanigan after leading laps 2-49. Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn., finished just behind Lanigan and Madden in the third position with Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., also just behind in the fourth spot. Polesitter Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, Ill., finished fifth after leading the race's opening lap.

Lanigan had to work hard for his 70th-career WoO LMS victory. He used the track's high groove to advance his Club 29 Race Car from fourth to second by lap 19 and began to challenge Madden for the lead before the halfway point.

Lanigan made multiple charges to pull alongside the low-running Madden, but each attempt to pass was thwarted as Madden pulled his Bloomquist Race Car ahead and edged away on longer green-flag runs.

Lanigan's chance at winning appeared to be slipping away when a poor restart on lap 36 dropped him back to third as Madden opened another comfortable lead. But Lanigan remained committed to the high side of the track and rode it back into the second spot just a few laps later.

Lanigan closed Madden's lead slightly late in the race, but he wasn't quite close enough to seriously challenge until Madden caught traffic as he headed for the white flag. Lanigan quickly pounced on the opportunity. He caught Madden in turns one and two, pulled alongside for the lead down the back straightaway, and charged ahead through the final corner to nose out front of Madden at the finish line.

"We were a little harder on tires, so I knew I had to stay up on that top and keep it going," said Lanigan, who claimed his second-career Charlotte victory. "I didn't get a good start on that last restart. I fell back third, but we got going there on the top and got my momentum going. We caught that lapped traffic again and it helped me on that last lap."

Just as Lanigan remained committed to the top groove for the entire race, Madden was steadfast in his line around the bottom groove. Madden's commitment to the bottom appeared to be the correct choice until slower traffic became a factor in the closing laps and prevented the standout Palmetto State driver from claiming what would have been his ninth-career WoO LMS victory.

"We were good enough to win tonight," a dejected Madden said after being denied a second-career World Finals victory. "The bottom wasn't the place to be in lapped traffic. It opened up the door for the guys using another line and we got beat."

Don O'Neal of Martinsville, Ind., finished sixth, while Eric Wells of Hazard, Ky., used a seventh-place finish to overtake Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa., for fifth in the WoO LMS points standings. Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., was eighth after charging into the top five early in the race while 16th-starting Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga., and 21st-starting Bub McCool of Vicksburg, Miss., rounded out the top 10 finishers.

The race was slowed by four cautions. The first appeared with nine laps complete when WoO LMS rookie Chase Junghans of Manhattan, Kan., slowed on the back straightaway. A lap-14 yellow flag appeared when Jason Feger slowed from the fourth spot after using a high-side rally to charge from 10th to second early in the race. The pace again slowed on lap 26 when Frank slowed with a flat tire.

The fourth and final caution was the most dramatic incident as it nearly took out the leader. Madden tangled with Frank as he attempted to put him down a lap, sending both cars up the racetrack. Both Lanigan and Owens drove by Madden in a three-wide move while Madden worked to correct his machine. But Frank slowed to a stop, bringing out the caution and allowing Madden to remain the leader.

Lanigan's dramatic victory came in front of a packed grandstand at Charlotte's 4/10-mile oval as the track hosted the first of back-to-back tripleheaders featuring the WoO LMS, the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Cars and the Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modifieds. The World Finals conclude on Saturday with another tripleheader featuring the season finales for all three divisions. Gates open at 3 p.m., hot laps are scheduled to start at 4 p.m. and racing is set to begin at 5 p.m.

Lanigan and Owens Split Fast-Time Honors In World Finals at Charlotte
Club 29 Drivers Share the Spotlight on Thursday Night at The Dirt Track at Charlotte

WoOLMS PR
CONCORD, N.C. (November 6) - Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., and Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., put Club 29 Race Cars in the spotlight Thursday at The Dirt Track at Charlotte by splitting fast-time honors during Qualifying Night at the 8th Annual Bad Boy Buggies World of Outlaws World Finals.

Kicking off his championship crowning weekend on a high note, Lanigan, 44, posted the fastest lap in the first of two rounds of Ohlins Shocks Time Trials for the World of Outlaws Late Model Series. Owens, 42, was fastest in Thursday's second qualifying session.

The two qualifying rounds were part of the opening night of the World Finals weekend at Charlotte's 4/10-mile oval. The three-night blockbuster event features season-ending doubleheaders for the WoO LMS, the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Cars and the Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modifieds.

The two Late Model qualifying sessions featured a field of 77 Late Model entries. The lap times will be used to determine the heat race lineups for separate $12,000-to-win WoO LMS programs on Friday and Saturday with first round qualifying times setting lineups for Friday night's six heat races and round two aligning the six heats on Saturday.

Lanigan, who will clinch his third WoO LMS championship just by competing in the weekend's two programs, enjoyed the preliminary night success as both a driver and a chassis builder. The 2008 and 2012 WoO LMS titlist launched Club 29 Race Cars this season after developing the new chassis and sister chassis brand Black Diamond Chassis with noted Late Model setup guru Ronnie Stuckey. Owens was among the early drivers to join the Club when he began fielding a Club 29 car in March.

"It's definitely exciting for Club 29 and Black Diamond Chassis," said Lanigan, whose lone Charlotte victory came in the opening round of last year's World Finals. "It's phenomenal to get fast time both rounds. Just can't wait for the rest of the weekend."

Lanigan will look to add to a stellar year that has already set a new record for the most WoO LMS wins in a single season. With his 16th WoO LMS victory of the year in the national tour's most recent race Sept. 13 at Michigan's Berlin Raceway, Lanigan broke his own single-season wins record from his championship-winning campaign in 2012.

With the championship virtually locked up, Lanigan's primary focus at Charlotte is adding even more victories to his 2014 tally.

"It's definitely nice to come down here and race and not have to worry about points," said Lanigan, who leads the WoO LMS all-time wins list with 69 career series victories. "The car's great right now and I can't wait until tomorrow."

Owens had perhaps the best night overall considering his first-round qualifying effort was second fastest behind Lanigan in Group B. With front-row starting spots for his heat race on both Friday and Saturday, Owens is in prime position to add to his five-career World Finals victories.

"We've got a good race car, got good qualifying times both rounds and looking forward to the rest of the weekend," said Owens, who's tied with three-time WoO LMS champion Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., for the most World Finals victories. "It's kinda like the same old Charlotte. Things seem to be working out for us right now. We've got a good starting spot in the heat races so maybe we can put a show on for the fans."

Lanigan's fast time in the first round of qualifying was quickest in Group B of the two-group session. Group A fast time went to 2006 WoO LMS champion Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y. Owens topped Group A of round two time trials while Chris Madden of Gray Court, S.C., was fastest in Group B.

Other drivers turning in notable efforts on Thursday include Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., who was fourth in his group in round one and second in round two; Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., who was third-fastest and fifth-fastest in his two qualifying groups; and Rick Eckert of York, Pa., who posted qualifying times among the top five of his group in both rounds.

The Bad Boy Buggies World of Outlaws World Finals continue on Friday and Saturday with gates opening at 3 p.m. and hot laps scheduled to begin at 4 each day. Each program will include a 50-lap A-Main for the WoO LMS, a 30-lap A-Main for the WoO Sprint Car Series and a 40-lap main event for the Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modifieds.
