FIVE DRIVERS COLLECT SECOND WAYNE COUNTY SPEEDWAY CHECKERS
by Mike Swanger ORRVILLE, OH (May 23) - After two weeks of rain, Wayne County Speedway was back in action on McDonald’s night and Lowe’s Kid’s Project night with the action on the track highly entertaining. Mitch Harble and Jason Dolick brought the Fisher Performance Sprints to the green flag and Harble would jump out to a big lead early on as Wooster’s Brad Haudenschild would pull into second from his sixth starting spot on lap three with Danny Mumaw right on his tail. The field would be closed together following a lap 16 caution. The intensity of the race would skyrocket as on the restart, Haudenschild would do a slide job on Harble in turn two but Harble returned the favor in turn four. Two laps later, Haudenschild would make another slider on Harble in turn four and this put the Kempthorn Auto Mall, Fire and Ice Pub and J&J Auto Racing #38k in front for good for his second win of the season. Mumaw would pass Harble with four laps to go for second but tagged the wall in turn four on the last lap to give second back to Harble. Chris Myers finished fourth while 16th starting Shawn Hubler raced to fifth. Jim Morris and Harble topped the heats. The Lias Tire Super Late Models would take almost the same script as the Sprints did with Ryan Markham and Jim Nicely opening on the front row with Markham taking early control as with fourth starting Rick Bond and 6th starting Doug Drown moving in behind Markham on lap four. After a lap nine caution, Markham would be challenged by Drown for the lead as the two would go side by side for for five circuits before Drown and his Hall’s Auto Sales, Kar Connection and Wooster Glass #240 made the last pass going down the back stretch with 10 laps to go and post his second win of the season at WCS. Bond and JR Gentry dueled for third until two laps to go when Bond’s motor started smoking and he pulled off at that time. Brad Malcuit would claim fourth as 10th starting Dave Hornikel filled out the top five. Heat winners were Drown and Bond. Driving the Aamco Transmissions, Excalibur Body Shop and Baldwin Motorsports #7up, Randolph’s Larry Baldwin led all the way from his pole position to score his first win of the season in the Aamco Transmissions Super Stock feature. Tyler Thompson was running second for most of the race but with five laps to go, got loose in turn four that allowed both Nick Smith and Brandon Gardner to get by and they would finish second and third with Tyler Nicely finishing behind Thompson for fifth. Thompson and Baldwin notched the heat wins. Four drivers had their hands on the lead in the Harriger Towing Rush Late Model feature with Alan Dellinger setting the pace for the opening two laps before opening night feature winner, Dennis Lunger Jr., would lead the next four circuits. Using the high grove, heat winner Ryan Markham would power past Lunger Jr. for the lead on lap 7 and on the next lap, Lunger Jr. would bounce off the front wall and was rear ended by Dellinger. Lunger Jr. would go to the pits to have his car checked out and returned to the race as Dellinger’s car stayed on the track. On the restart, Millersburg’s Charlie Duncan was behind Markham and they would go side by side, back and forth for the top spot as Dellinger and Justin Chance battled for third. With four laps to go, Duncan powered past Markham for the lead and held him off on the last lap to put the Hall’s Auto Sales, Kar Connection and Nationwide Vehicle Protection #240 into victory lane for the second time this season. Tenth starting Chance would grab third as Lunger Jr.came back to finish fourth in front of heat winner Dellinger. The WQKT Mini Stocks had extra money to race for thanks to Direct Hydraulics and Wooster’s Doug Hensel went flag to flag to pick up the increased purse and pocket his second win of the year aboard the Finishline Autobody, Fast Lane Towing and B S Motorsports #18. He was hounded all race long by Brad Hensel, who was virtually riding Doug’s bumper all race long, Gary Hensel Jr. held off Michael Workman for third as Jeff Edwards rounded out the top five. Doug and Gary Hensel Jr. bested the heat races. For the second time this season, Billy Dawson of Lakeville led all the way in the Mini Wedge feature for the win. Driving the Harriger Towing, DJ Directional Services and AMS OIl # 7d, Dawson, the heat winner, was followed by Matthew Moore, Logan Duncan, Kolton and Konner Thomas. Jamey Johnson scored his first Flat Track Cart win at WCS as Colton Shaw, Scott Delaney, Chuck Conway and Steve Reed followed. Johnson and Justin Chance won the heat races. Just like every race night, drivers were also competing for extra prizes thanks to the Contingency Connection Awards. Saturday, May 30 will see the UNOH All Star Sprints back for a $5,000 to win show with the Harriger Towing Rush Late Models and the Aamco Transmission Super Stock in action also.
