Rich Berry PITTSBURGH, Penn. (April 1) - The 2008 edition of the King of the Knob at the Roaring Knob Motorsports Complex will fly under the banner of the UFo Race Championship presented by Comcast. This 12th event takes the total Super Late Model prize money and contingencies to over $444,000 for the new tour.
The Roaring Knob Motorsports Complex is a 3/8 mile semi-banked oval promoted by Ron Brutt. The track is located in the scenic mountains of southwestern PA. The King of the Knob is the traditional season finale for the track, increasing in payoff and car count each season since its inception. This UFo Race Championship presented by Comcast event will be the first-ever Super Late Model tour event at Roaring Knob, taking the race to the next level. This year's edition is scheduled for Saturday Night, September 6 and will pay $5,500 to win for the "Area 51"-lap championship. Jason Covert from York Haven, PA is the back-to-back defending event champion.
Officials of the Central Pennsylvania Speedway and the Unified Force Race Championship presented by Comcast have come to an agreement to add another pair of major Super Late Model events to the 2008 UFo tour schedule. The addition of these events pushes the posted awards for the UFo Super Late Models to over $421,000.
The Central PA Speedway was purchased by Tim Bainey in February. Bainey and track general manager Kenny McLaughlin have quickly developed plans for a spectacular season of special events including two visits for the brand-new UFo Race Championship Super Late Model Tour presented by Comcast. This racey 3/8 mile track located at Clearfield, PA will mark the northeastern boundary for the tour for the 2008 season. The track, also known as "the Big Bear" is both a fan and driver favorite because its high-speed action and excellent viewing facilities.
The first UFo event at Central PA Speedway is scheduled for Sunday Night, May 25. Tentatively titled "The Grizzly," the winner of the "Area 51-lap Super Late Model Championship will receive $5,000. The prestigious "Yankee Doodle" will take place on Thursday, July 3 and will feature an increased payoff of $7,000 to win for the Super Late Models. The Street Stocks are scheduled to complete the racing program at both events.
The UFo Race Championship Tour presented by Comcast is the region's new racing alliance and now offers area Super Late Model teams over $444,000 of awards for the 2008 season, including $404,000 of cash prizes and points bonus money. This record amount of prize money is offered within a 125 mile radius. The tour has been designed to revitalize racing by offering maximum prize payoffs with minimum travel for the race teams and fans.
The season will kick off on Sunday, April 13 at the Challenger Raceway with the $5,000 to win PA State Short Track Championships. Challenger will also offer a $2,000 to win Super Late Model event on Saturday, April 12.
