HOGGE IV TAKES GUGLIELMONI BACK-UP CAR TO VICTORY IN DELTA CLASSIC LATE MODEL FEATURE; CASS TOP OF CLASS IN OPEN MODIFIED FEATURE
Oval Motorsports
ANTIOCH, Calif. (October 5) - Bobby Hogge IV of Salinas, Calif. jumped into Paul Guglielmoniʼs back-up late model stock car and took it to victory lane in the Delta Classic, Antioch Speedwayʼs biggest race of the season. Brian Cass of Livermore, Calif. was not to be denied as he fought off Hogge IV to win the “open” modified stock car half of the double header.

Guglielmoni, of Vacaville, Calif., heard Hogge IV was out of time in building an engine for his late model car for the race, and offered Hogge IV his back-up car.
“It is a great car – top notch equipment,” said Hogge IV of the Guglielmoni car. “We tweaked it to get the steering to my liking, and that was about it.”
When asked the age old question if it is the car or the driver that wins a race, Hogge IV looked to the car.
“There is only so much a driver can do, the equipment and the crew play a major role,” he explained. “More importantly, tonight a new friendship was created. Paul (Guglielmoni) helped me and hopefully I can help him.”
Hogge IV ended the three-feature streak of Chicoʼs Richard Papenhausen. Papenhausen finished tenth, sidelined by a bad cylinder.
Randy Shafer of Vacaville, driving another late model out of the Guglielmoniʼs Vaca Valley Excavating stable, held off Hogge for five laps before having to settle for second. Shafer then had to fight off Livermore, Calif.ʼs Shawn Deforest and Troy Foulger of Martinez, Calif. Dean Devolder of Pacifica was fifth, with Guglielmoni chasing him across the finish line.
For Cass, the victory was sweet after seeing the checkered flag snatched from him by Ryan McDaniel of Chico, Calif. in the modified half of last yearʼs Delta Classic. Cass won the modified portion of the race two years ago.
“Restarts are treacherous – I was hoping for none,” Cass said in victory lane. “Getting bitten by that last lap restart last year is something I canʼt forget.”
Cass had reason to be concerned. Hogge IV worked his way through the pack and closed the quarter lap lead Cass dashed off to early in the race. The green flag continued to fly, as Hogge IV applied pressure on Cass, trying to make a pass on the
final lap.
Austin Burke of Salinas edged four-time Antioch champ Foulger for third. Both Burke and Foulger had to work their way from the 15-car Modified “B-Main” to make the Delta Classic. Fifth went to last yearʼs winner, McDaniel.
Zack Lynskey of Fairfield returned to victory lane for the second week in a row in a crash filled All-Star Wingless Sprint Car feature event. Violent flips brought the red flag out three times, and all drivers involved were not injured.
“The track was fast,” Lynskey said in victory lane. “I did my passing on the bottom. I tried to stay under, and it worked as we came from tenth and got it done.”
Danny Wagner of Bay Point won the Dwarf Car feature with a commanding lead.
A thrilling Hobby Stock main event saw Kimo “The Flyinʼ Hawaiian” Oreta of Vacaville battle side by side with Brad Myers of Brentwood. Oreta took the win at the finish line. A week earlier it was Myers besting Oreta on the last lap.
“He beat me last week. He wasnʼt going to beat me back to back,” Oreta said in victory Lane. “This one was mine tonight.”
At that point, Myers then snuck up behind Oreta and gave him a cream pie to the face.
